Welcome to the ISMAA (International Self-Monitoring Association for oral Anticoagulation) website, a site for health care professionals who deal with patients on oral anticoagulant therapy. If you have an interest in oral anticoagulant therapy, please join our membership to acquire knowledge and share experience on patient regulated or monitored oral anticoagulant therapy.

Long term goals

To improve the quality of oral anticoagulant treatment through patient self-testing (PST)

To improve the quality of life for patients on oral anti-coagulation treatment

Objectives

1. To develop guidelines or policies and to publish these as a consensus statement, to include:

     - criteria for patient selection for PST

     - criteria for patient training and trainer training

     - high quality dose management (HQDM)

 

     - management of out of therapeutic range INRs

     - frequency of testing

     - quality control and performance testing

2. To develop/sponsor continuing education programmes for healthcare professionals and patients

3. To promote PST to both healthcare professionals and patient/patient groups through:

     - educational meetings

     - web-site

     - guidelines

     - patient pamphlets and information booklets

4. To develop links with relevant organisations including all relevant patient association

5. To become an advocacy group for the best model of care.

6. To assist in all aspects of clinical and scientific research into anticoagulation through association and through original research
