| Disease: | Non-valvular atrial fibrillation |
| Purpose: | To compare the efficacy of warfarin in two different dosages and aspirin for the primary prevention of ischaemic stroke and systemic thromboembolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation |
| Study Design: | Randomised, open |
| Follow-up: | Mean 2.7 years |
| Patients: | 729 patients, aged > 60 years, with sustained or intermittent atrial fibrillation |
| Treatmentregimen: | Oral anticoagulants to target international normalised ratio 2.5-3.5, or 1.1-1.6, or aspirin, 150 mg/day |
| Results: | The overall incidence of vascular death, stroke, systemic thromboembolism, or major haemorrhage was 2%. In patients with a contraindication to oral anticoagulants, the incidence was 10% in the aspirin group and in the low-dose oral anticoagulant group. The main trial results are not yet published |
