Disease: Transient ischaemia or ischaemic stroke
Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of daily aspirin and anticoagulant drugs in patients after a transient ischaemic attack or minor ischaemic stroke
Study Design: Randomised, open, blind assessment
Follow-up: Planned 2.9 years; fulfilled 1200 person- years
Patients: Aim 3000 patients (1243 randomised)
Treatmentregimen: Aspirin, 30 mg/day, or anticoagulant drugs to give an international normalised ratio of 3.0-4.4
Results: There was an excess of primary outcome events (death from all vascular causes, stroke, MI, or major bleeding complications) in the anticoagulant therapy group, 54/616 vs 26/627 in the aspirin group
